Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
Philippians 4:8
The pre-lit Christmas tree is a modern wonder. Three parts lock together with three plugs to give you an instant, no-mess, Christmas delight! So, Thanksgiving weekend I pulled the tree and all the trimmings from the attic and began the modern tradition. The moment of truth when you plug in the tree was dashed as the top section did not illuminate. The type “A” personality was immediately frustrated. The teenager helping quickly said, “Let’s just put the angel on top. We can look for a new tree after Christmas or early next year. The tree is bright enough and the decorations have so many good memories.”
Here was a different perspective, only look at the light. Isn’t that what Paul said in Philippians 4:8? Find the good and think on that.
So when I looked at the entire tree, I saw a beautiful reminder of Christmas, not darkness. God uses all things to help us look at ourselves. I have dark spots, He knows they are there, but he focuses on the bright spots.
Application
This Christmas, look at the branches in your life that are lit instead of dwelling on those that aren’t.
Prayer
Our Father, thank you for simple images that help us see Your truth.
