As (Jesus) went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.
Mark 6:34
I am amazed at how fans go to extremes to see their favorite celebrities. When we hear that a popular celebrity is going to give a concert near us, we begin planning how we too can be there for the concert. Maybe it’s save money, or maybe it’s being the first in line to buy the tickets, or access the website to buy tickets when it opens. And usually we don’t just buy one ticket; we want at least two, if not a block of tickets. We want everyone we know to share the experience.
Imagine what it was like to have been one of the 5,000 that walked miles on foot to hear the famous teacher, Jesus. Those that followed Jesus wanted to sit at his feet, see him, and hear him. Unlike many celebrities today, Jesus was never pretentious. Jesus did not stand out in the crowd; he looked like the common person from that time period. What was it about Jesus that made people want to follow him and be in his presence?
Jesus’ wisdom and compassion attracted people wherever he went. People wanted to know him and witness his miracles. He was more than a prophet and a teacher.
Application
Whom or what do you seek most?
Prayer
God, may I go to extremes to know you and honor you.
