“A Divine Honor”

This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

Matthew 1:18-19

Joseph almost missed Christmas. He was engaged to Mary. And in those times that was just as legally binding as being married. So, when Mary came home from spending several months out-of-town and told Joseph that she was pregnant, he knew that they had not had relations, and the law was to stone-to-death for unfaithfulness. Since he was a man of integrity, all he could think was “I’ll just quietly divorce her.”

The Bible doesn’t give us all the details. But it does tell us an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream. I’m sure Mary did her best to also explain what had occurred to her. What first looked to be a huge problem and embarrassment was actually a divine honor.

Instead Joseph honored his commitment to Mary, and the result was God’s divine plan.

Application

Is there a problem you are facing today? Is it possible this could be part of God’s plans for you?

Prayer

Thank you Father that Your plans for me are plans of hope. I trust you with my life and all the circumstances that come with it.
