And Eli said unto her, “How long wilt thou be drunken? Put away thy wine from thee.” And Hannah answered and said, “No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord.”
1 Samuel 1:14-15
Can you empathize with Hannah? Have you ever endured an embarrassing public accusation, a rumor, or a misunderstanding? Most of us probably have. How did you respond? Did it mirror Hannah? My guess is probably not. Your response was probably an angry insult, a bitter put-down, or a tearful groan.
However, when Hannah was falsely accused, she politely explained her behavior. Her words to Eli were gracious and respectful. A cutting remark to Eli might have only shown hate for him and that would not have achieved a positive result. When Hannah responded without anger she allowed Eli to respond in the same spirit, in spite of his earlier opinion. Therefore, her kind words prompted a kind response.
Imagine the impact we could have on our families, our co-workers, and friends if we responded to accusations, rumors, or insults the way Hannah did.
Application
No matter what others say or do, respond with love and grace.
Prayer
Thank you, Father, for the examples you give us in Your Word.
