“Better than Most”

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne…..
“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”

John 13:34-35

We live in a world where it’s easy to look around and compare our walk with God to others. It is difficult not to get into the mentality of “since nobody’s perfect, as long as I’m better than most, I’m okay”.

However, God desires our constant obedience. He wants us to stay in a close relationship with Him at all times. In Isaiah 6, the prophet Isaiah has a vision of heaven, with God on His throne. Immediately upon seeing this, Isaiah is reminded of his own sinfulness and the sinfulness of those around him. This is a vivid reminder to us that we are to compare ourselves to God, not each other. Through this, He will show us the   areas in our lives that need improving and give us the strength to make such changes. If we keep an eye only on other people, we have a much lower standard to keep; however if we keep our eyes on the Holy God, we have so much more room to grow in His grace!

Application

Who do I compare myself to? Do I think that I’m better than most other people, so that must be good enough or do I compare myself to God?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for being a Holy and sinless God to whom we can come to at any time in our lives. Thank you for the power that you give us to make positive changes in our lives and to be the people you desire for us to be.
