Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possession and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come follow me.”
Matthew 19:21
For many years I believed my job and my pay check defined who I was. I placed my hope in the stability and security of my employer instead of God. I went to church, volunteered, and read my Bible, but I held my security in my pay check. Then one day my supervisor called me into his office. We had budget cuts, and my job was being eliminated. Fear flooded me.
Through this experience I realized that I had misplaced my hope and trust. My situation reminded me of the rich young ruler who also misplaced his hope. He had great wealth, but was unwilling to let go of it and follow Jesus. Status, riches, and possessions are empty substitutes for God. I now see that losing my job was the best thing that could have happened. During this time in my life, I learned that God is faithful to meet all my needs.
Application
Trust God in all circumstances.
Prayer
Thank you for being my hope, today and every day.
