Peter answered, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”
Matthew 14:13-33
It had rained hard for two days. I lived on a paved road. However, my friend lived on a dirt road. I had made the commitment to feed her dogs while she was out of town. Today was the day to check on the dogs. If you’ve never traveled a dirt road after a rain, the path is slippery, to say the least. The best you can hope for is that a large truck has broken the way and provided “ruts” to guide you.
As I maneuvered down the dirt road, I prayed, “Lord, please keep me in the ruts.” Reflecting back, I realize that spiritually I need God to do the opposite for me. Sometimes I get in a spiritual rut or a rut at work. I am unwilling to face a new challenge. In those times I ask God to protect me so that I don’t have an uncomfortable experience.
Ruts are a safe place on a dirt road. But in our spiritual life and our work, sometimes like Peter, we are called to step out of the boat, do the uncomfortable so that we may grow.
Application
Make the commitment to trust God, and step out when the situation feels uncomfortable. Allow yourself to grow.
Prayer
God, may I trust you in all situations, so that I may grow more in your likeness.
